Historic charm, uncrowded beaches and a beautiful river welcome you in Greenough. Just four hours north of Perth, this area is becoming increasingly popular with visitors of all ages, tastes and interests.Being one of the first settlements in Western Australia, the landscape is sprinkled with picturesque ruins of old homes, churches and schools.

Step back in time by strolling through Central Greenough Historical Settlement, these 11 character stone buildings are remnants of a once thriving community of pioneers, who developed the area at the turn of the 19th century. This National Trust treasure is surrounded by farming land and includes a cafe and tourist information. Central Greenough is open daily from 9am to 5pm, just a 20 minute drive south of Geraldton. Self guided tour booklets are available.

Charming historic buildings dot the Greenough Shire, adding a rustic feel to the countryside. Highlights include Clinch's Mill, Gray's Store, Convict Bridge and Wesley Church.

Call in for a drink at the historic Hampton Arms, built in 1864.

One of the first things you'll notice in Greenough is the leaning trees. Buffeted by prevailing southerly winds, the trees' horizontal trunks have become something of an icon for the region. You can view and photograph the unusually shaped trees from the Brand Highway on the Greenough Flats.

Greenough Pioneer Museum is located in a beautifully restored two storey house alongside Maley's Mill, the Pioneer Museum offers an insight into a bygone era. Open daily, you'll find this treasure 19km south of Geraldton on the Brand Highway.

For one of the best displays of railway memorabilia outside of Perth, visit the Walkaway Railway Museum in the Walkaway township. Open Monday to Friday.

The Ellendale Pool in Greenough is the ideal picnic location. Giant gums and a rocky gorge surround the pool,barbecue and restroom facilities are on offer. Great for bird watching and photography.

Soak up the wonders of nature, be amazed at the grace of water birds or get up close and examine the intricacies of wildflowers as nature puts on one of its most dazzling shows. The Greenough River Nature Trail traverses the banks of the Greenough River and the Greenough River mouth. It offers ideal locations for picnicking, bike riding, walking, canoeing, rowing and fishing.

Head along Ellendale Road from the Walkaway townsite to gaze up at the 54 giant turbines of the Alinta Wind Farm against a stunning backdrop of rolling hills and ocean.

Flat Rocks is a surfing destination about 30km south of Geraldton, this is a must stop site for water lovers keen on fishing, swimming and surfing. Such is its quality; Flat Rocks hosts a round of the State Surfing Championships each year.

Bringo Lookout on the Geraldton to Mullewa Road affords great views of the hills back towards Geraldton. During spring, beautiful displays of Geraldton wax line the road to the Lookout and western grey kangaroos are often seen in this area.

In spring, throughout the Greenough Shire there are many areas excellent for viewing wildflowers.
