Exmouth is located a 2 1/2 hour flight north of Perth and is situated on the eastern coast of the North West Cape of Western Australia. The Ningaloo Marine Park is a divers' and snorkellers' paradise. Encompassing 260 kilometres of coastline, at its closest point the reef is within metres of the shore. The reef itself comprises 200 species of hard corals and 50 species of soft corals. Its close proximity to the shoreline means its easily accessible. Get up close and experience the wonders of the Ningaloo reef. You can explore this amazing underwater world yourself or join a tour to experience the best spots. From late April to early July each year, the Ningaloo Marine Park plays home to the world's biggest species of fish - whale sharks. Despite their size - up to 18m long! The whale shark is as harmless as it is majestic. Exmouth offers visitors a unique, once in a lifetime opportunity to swim with these gentle giants. Tours are available daily during the season.
Turquiose Bay is the most relaxing beach to just sit back and soak up the beautiful surroundings and sunshine. Its white sandy shores give way to incredibly clear waters harbouring many of the wonders of the Ningaloo Reef. You can jump in the water at one end of the beach and let the gentle current drift you over the reef for a fantastic snorkelling experience. However, be aware currents can be strong, especially around the sandbar and at the southern most point of the bay. As such, this snorkel site is suited to swimmers of average fitness and snorkelling ability.
The beauty of Exmouth dosnt end at the sea shores. On the west side of North West Cape you can experience an outback holiday in the ruggedly beautiful Cape Range National Park.
The Murion Islands lay just 9.8 nautical miles off the tip of North West Cape. Abundant marine life surround them and the atmosphere is truly tranquil. You can camp on the islands but require permission. For more information contact the Exmouth Visitor Centre.
There are endless fantastic explore or relax on around Exmouth. Town Beach is closest to Exmouth itself and also provides for four wheel drive access. 12km north you'll find Budgedi Beach. This is an excellent location for swimming, snorkelling and fishing. If its surf you want, head to the Dunes, 17km north of Exmouth. Lighthouse Bay offers fishing swimming and sunbathing. You can access it via tracks along the Mildura Wreck Road. You'll discover many more pristine beach locations right along the western side of the cape.
History and views in one. 19km north west of Exmouth, is Vlamingh Head Lighthouse. Built in 1912, the lighthouse offers sweeping views of the Cape. Ruins of a World War radar are also visible from this site.
Jurabi Turtle Centre is located just south of Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, this is the first point of call for anyone interested in viewing or learning about the sea turtles of Ningaloo. There is a pictorial turtle display, shaded seating and its only a short walk to a turtle rookery.
Exmouth is a fishing mecca renowned for prized fish such as groper, coral trout, snapper and emporer. Game fishing for species like marlin, mahi mahi, mackerel and sailfish is also popular. You can fish from the shores, from your own boat, on a charter or hire boat.
From Lighthouse bay you can see the wreck of the SS Mildura, a cattle ship that was lost en-route from the Kimberley during a cyclone in 1907. Salvaged timbers and irons can be seen today at Yardie Homestead where they were used in renovations.
