Mt Augustus
Mt Augustus is the world's largest monocline, twice the size of Ayers Rock and 460kms east of Carnarvon. It is known as Burringurrah by the local Aboriginal people. During dawn and dusk, its colour changes almost minute by minute from deep indigo to bright pink, orange or red and occasionally green, reflecting the mood of the rock and the spirits living there.
Increasing numbers of people are coming to Mount Augustus to capture the moods of the rock in photographs or simply to enjoy the experience. Aboriginal etchings can be found around the
rock, or for the fit there is a hiking trail to the rock's summit. (Approx. 6 hour return hike).
The Rock is home to an abundance of wildlife including over 100 species of birds and many reptiles. Accommodation is only 5km from the base of the Rock at the Mt Augustus Outback
Tourist Resort or 37km from Mt Augustus National Park is Cobra Station.
In the part of the world you will be surprised to learn that there are watering holes along the Lyons River that boast water virtually all year round. With banks lined with Ghost Gums, Wattle and Corkwood, they are suitable for fishing, canoeing and in places, swimming.
