On his epic journey in 1854, the explorer Robert Austin recognised the mineral potential of the Gascoyne Murchison region - long before the great Coolgardie gold ruch of 1890. His lead was not followed up by prospectors until some 35 years later, when places like Mt Magnet, Cue, Meekatharra and Sandstone came to the fore during the gold boom, drawing miners and prospectors in their thousands.
