Culture & Heritage

Australia's Coral Coast is rich in its culture and heritage.  Influenced by various settlers, the differences up and down the coast are remarkable.  The coast is also loaded with culture... food, wine and entertainment.

There are many historical buildings that dot Australia's Coral Coast landscape, many remnants of historic townsites, adding a rustic feel to the region.

Step back in time and enjoy the history and heritage of the following towns:-

Mullewa

  • Murals - the Mullewa townsite is adorned with giant, colourful murals depicting different aspects of Mullewa history.

Carnamah

  • Carnamah Historical Museum - located in one of a number of historic stone buildings in Carnamah. Its open Friday between 1.30pm and 5.00pm.
  • Macpherson Homestead - This charming historical homestead was built in 1869 and once served as a post office and wayfarers' rest home. Today it makes a great picnic spot with views over the Carnamah townsite. The homestead is accessed from Bunjil Road.

Northampton

  • Chiverton House Museum - was constructed in the late 1800's and showcases a large range of artifacts and photographs as well as restored farm machinery.
  • Our Lady in Ara Coeli Church (c. 1936)- was designed by the legendary Monsignor Hawes with some influence from the Parish Priest of the time Father Irwin.
  • Sacred Heart Convent - built in 1919 was also designed by Monsignor Hawes. The convent now offers budget accommodation, function room and catering facilities.

Greenough

  • Central Greenough Historical Settlement - formerly known as the Hamlet. The character stone buildings are remnants of a once thriving community of pioneers who developed the area at the turn of the 19th century.

Chapman Valley

  • Nanson and Nabawa - these townsites boast a selection of historic architecture. Nanson is home to the Chapman Valley Historical Society.

Port Gregory

  • Lynton Hiring Station - tucked at the foot of rolling hills, the station's stone buildings once housed convicts who worked on the Geraldine Mine and local pastoral stations. The convict facilities were built in 1853 and have been recently restored.

Carnarvon

    • Carnarvon Heritage Precinct - comprises the Carnarvon One mile jetty, the Carnarvon Tramway and the Lighthouse Keepers Museum. All three are remaining elements of the port of Carnarvon, which was initially constructed in 1897.

    Exmouth

    • Vlamingh Head Lighthouse - built in 1912 this lighthouse offers sweeping views of the Cape.
