Shark Bay is also an important turtle nesting location with up to 6,000 marine turtles living in its waters. This includes the precious Loggerhead Turtle considered the most endangered turtle species nesting in Australia. DEC's Western Australian Marine Turtle Project is researching valuable information into the life history, behaviour and conservation of turtles in Shark Bay.
Turtle Nesting Season
Ningaloo Reef and adjacent islands are one of the world's major breeding areas for sea turtles. During the breeding season between December and March, Green and Loggerhead turtles make their way up the beaches to lay their eggs.
Night tours provide the opportunity to watch the turtles make their long arduous journey up the beaches to lay their eggs or to watch the hatchlings scramble down to the water's edge.
The best beaches to view sea turtles laying and hatching are from Hunters Access down to Wobiri Access.
Jurabi Turtle Centre located just south of Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, provides information about the sea turtles of Ningaloo. There is a turtle display, shaded seating and only a short walk to a turtle rookery.
