Every year from late March to June following the mass spawning of coral, the world's biggest species of fish - the whale shark, congregates in the Ningaloo Marine Park. The chance to snorkel with these gentle giants is the opportunity of a lifetime and visitors from all over the world head to Ningaloo Reef during whale shark season.
These filter feeders which are harmless to humans can grow up to 18m long and cruise the world's ocean in seach of concentrations to feed on. Ningaloo Reef is the only place in Australia that whale sharks are known to regularly return to feed on the coral spawn, close to shore waters easily accessible to observers.
Tours are available daily from Exmouth and Coral Bay and provide snorkellers with the rare opportunity to have the ultimate wildlife encounter with these mesmerising creatures.
