Fishing Hotspots

Australia's Coral Coast is Western Australia's most exciting aquatic playground.  A huge variety of fish species ranging from standard catches to game and deep sea fish are plentiful in Coral Coast waters. The 1,200 kilometre coastline from Cervantes to Exmouth is the perfect destination to chase the catch regardless of whether you are an amateur angler or a skilled professional.

Dongara-Port Denison

The twin towns of Dongara and Port Denison are considered to be the lobster capital of Australia and are perfectly suited for the amateur fisherman.  Three jetties situated along Arurine Bay beckon for a line to be thrown in while you enjoy panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.

Geraldton and the Abrolhos Islands

Point Moore and Separation Point are terrific locations if you are fishing for Whiting and Herring.  The Batavia Coast Marina and Fisherman’s wharf are not only great for catching Bream but offer fantastic vision of the rock lobster fishing fleet during peak season from November 15 to June 30.  There are up to 300 trawlers in the water at any one time.  Beach fishing is another popular choice among the locals.

Fishing in the Abrolhos Islands requires a charter or hire boat and drift baiting is a very popular and rewarding activity.  Some parts of the Abrolhos are protected and have restricted access.

Kalbarri

The Murchison River flows alongside Kalbarri and harvests species such as Black Bream, Mulloway, Whiting, Giant Herring and Trevally.  More specifically, the following locations are frequented by regular fishing devotee's:

·         Sitting at the mouth of the Murchison River, Black Rock and Oyster Reef can produce some amazing catches, especially Tailor!  Ensure you heed the warnings of the locals, as the incredible swells can catch the inexperienced fisherman off guard.

·         The Blue Holes, also a premier Tailor location can be difficult, but with a little bit of local knowledge can produce some amazing results.  Check in with the local visitor’s centre to pick up some handy hints and perhaps the Kalbarri Fishing Guide.

·         Wittecarra Creek & Red Bluff located south of the Kalbarri township are excellent for surf fishing with the chance of catching Mackeral, Tailor, Mullaway and Cod.

Shark Bay

Locals recommend dropping a line from the shore or jetty in Denham.  However, for that elusive catch you really should join a fishing charter that takes you out amongst the action and into the deep blue.  Joining a fishing charter will also provide you with all the tackle, bait and experience you need.

Shark Bay itself is teeming with hundreds of species of fish, and on a lucky outing you may be witness to a migrating whale or even a shark.

As Shark Bay is a protected area, there are restrictions on the quota's and size of fish caught for recreational purposes.  Fishing information and restrictions can be sourced from a Local Visitors Centre.

Carnarvon

Built in 1897, One Mile Jetty is a 1.6 kilometre fishing hotspot.  Very popular with the locals, the jetty provides Mulloway, Tailor, Bream and mud crabs as the common catches with Blue Manna crabs making an appearance between March and July.

Just south of the Blowholes, a coastal coral reef yields the occasional crayfish and oysters can be prised off of the rocks surrounding the rock pools.

Gnaraloo Station, approximately 90 minutes north of Carnarvon is a great fishing location for the intermediate to experienced angler.  The waters harvest Emperor, Mackerel, Tuna, Trevally, Pink Snapper, Jobfish, Cod and Sailfish... most of these being easily caught year round.  Drift baiting is also quite rewarding at Gnaraloo.

Coral Bay

Coral Bay is exceptional with its diverse range of marine life. Australia's Coral Coast, including Coral Bay and surrounds supplies many a restaurant with its famous 'Nor West Snapper' and other easy on the palate catches including Red Emperor, Coral Trout and Cod.  The bay itself is considered a sanctuary zone, so fishing is not permitted, but travelling out into fishing waters will allow your catch to be thrown on the barbeque that very same night.

An unusual occurence, Snapper feedings occur at 3:30pm each day as schools of Nor West Snapper swim into shore to be fed, some even allowing you to hand feed them.

Deep sea, light game fishing and beach fishing (away from the popular swimming beaches) are all on offer in Coral Bay.

Exmouth

Bundegi flats are kilometres of fishing flats with popular fish species including Groper, Coral Trout, Snapper and Emperor.

Game fishing options via charter boat or hire boat are available and Marlin, Mahi Mahi, Mackerel and Sailfish are regular catches on these outings.

Learmonth Jetty is a fantastic spot for leisure anglers with Bream, Mackeral, Whiting and Queenfish swimming within reach of a rod and reel.
