Western Australia has been through a lot this past week, with our COVID lockdown and devastating bushfires and floods. Thankfully, we're through the worst and Western Australians are doing what we do best - rallying around those who most need our support at this time.
Here is some useful information to assist with your holiday planning and support Carnarvon, the northern reaches of the Coral Coast, and our beloved tourism industry during this time.
Is Carnarvon okay?
Yes! Carnarvon is okay and open for business. The flood waters are already receding and the town's clean up is underway.
Regional Express Airlines are still flying into town, and the North West Coastal Highway between the Shark Bay turnoff and Carnarvon is open with caution.
The North West Coastal Highway north of Carnarvon is now reopen at reduced capacity. There is a single lane open between 07:00am and 5:00pm daily with a speed limit of 60km/h. The road is open to all light vehicles and 4WDs, however heavy vehicle access restrictions apply. This is a temporary situation until the road is completely restored.
To stay up to date with road conditions and closures/openings, please visit MainRoad's website.
What about Coral Bay and Exmouth?
Yes! Both towns are fine and are accessible via road and air (Qantas fly from Perth into Learmonth Airport).
Do I need to cancel my holiday?
Not at all. If your plans change and you can't travel for whatever reason please support our industry by postponing your trip. Don't cancel - the Coral Coast isn't going anywhere!
What can I do to help?
As above, please postpone rather than cancelling your holiday.
You can support our beloved tourism industry by booking tours, activities and experiences as part of your holiday. Some of the best experiences are had with the guidance of a local tour operator, including bucket list items like swimming with whale sharks and manta rays, or seeing our incredible coastline from the air.
And remember - support local. When you're buying your groceries, buy home-grown fresh produce and support our plantations and farmers.
