Feeling a little stuck in your everyday routine and ready for your next adventure? To satisfy this wanderlust, we'll be visiting Cervantes.
This must-visit destination feels just far enough to be away from home but just close enough that it can be done in a weekend. Approximately 2 hours North of Perth let’s explore seven amazing things you can see and do in this charming crayfishing town.
Cervantes is renowned for its fresh crayfish, specifically the Western Rock Lobster, and a visit wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Lobster Shack. This Indian Ocean Rock Lobster Factory offers a guided behind-the-scenes tour of a live lobster processing plant. After the tour, you can enjoy a fresh crayfish lunch overlooking the Indian Ocean at the beachfront restaurant and bar.
Fun fact: The Lobster Shack also offers sea lion tours, taking passengers to the islands surrounding Cervantes to observe and swim with these playful creatures. These tours run over the summer period from the 1st of September to the 30th of April. Whether you dine in or pick up some delicious seafood to take away, Lobster Shack is not to be missed.
One of Australia’s most iconic natural wonders, The Pinnacles in Nambung National Park, is a surreal landscape of limestone pillars rising from the yellow desert sands. Walking or driving through these ancient formations is a truly unique experience.
During the early morning or late afternoon when the light casts dramatic shadows over the 17,487 hectares, there is an eerie, otherworldly sense to be experienced. The visitor centre provides informative displays about the geology and history of the area and is worthwhile to learn a little bit more about the National Park or grab a much-needed drink for the road to help you rehydrate.
Cool off after exploring The Pinnacles with a visit to Hangover Bay. Step off the white sands into the bright blue waters of the Indian Ocean for a swim or snorkel, launch your boat, or fish from the beach to catch dinner as the sun sets. Picnic tables and gas barbecues make Hangover Bay the ideal spot for both lunch and dinner by the ocean. After good winter rains, the coastal walk along the bay is coloured with clusters of pink and white banjine, yellow wattle, and other wildflower species.
For panoramic views and a leisurely walk, head to Thirsty Point Lookout and Trail. This 1.88km trail (each way) follows the coastline between Thirsty Point and Hansen Lookout. The pet-friendly path offers stunning views of the coastline and is a great excuse to enjoy some fresh air and immerse yourself in nature. Visit between August and October to see a beautiful display of wildflowers in bloom along the way.
Lake Thetis is one of only five sites in Western Australia featuring thrombolites, which are closely related to stromatolites—the oldest 'living' fossil in the world, at 3.5 billion years old. Thrombolites are believed to be over 3,000 years old. The Thirsty Point trail provides a detour into Lake Thetis for an extended walking experience, or the lake can be reached separately via motor vehicle. During wildflower season you will be rewarded with a stunning display of colour that only amplifies the natural wonder of the space.
Discover the town’s history and connection to the ocean on the Cervantes Art Trail. This trail features 23 pieces, including sculptures and murals, that tell the story of Cervantes. It’s a delightful way to explore the town while appreciating the local art scene.
To experience many of these attractions from the comfort of a guided tour, Autopia Tours, Australian Pinnacle Tours, Midwest Adventure tours and WA NT Tours offer excellent options. Autopia Tours provides two day-trip options, including their Pinnacles Tour and their 1 Day Lobster Lavender Tour. Australian Pinnacle Tours' day trip includes visits to Caversham Wildlife Park and Lancelin Sand Dunes in addition to the Cervantes attractions. Midwest Adventure Tours offer a Pinnacles & Crayfish Tour where you can tick off two of these suggestions in a day. WA NT Tours offers unique multi-day trips that highlight the best of Cervantes. It’s never a bad idea to embrace being a passenger princess, in fact, we support it.
