With their pure white sands, shimmering turquoise waters, and abundant coral and marine life, the Houtman Abrolhos islands offer end less opportunities for photography. Catching a scenic flight from Geraldton, we landed at east Wallabi island and spent the day at turtle bay; a secluded and pristine beach. Given the islands' natural beauty, any type of photography works well here. With a gopro or underwater camera, you can capture some of Western Australia’s most colourful corals or with a drone, you can capture the perfect curve of turtle bay and play around with shadows for extra depth. With a regular camera (or even a phone on portrait mode) you can get nice and close to the camera and create a beautiful image with endless shades of blue glistening behind you. To add extra interest to your pictures accessories work great here; think picnic umbrellas, floaties, even beach towels and hats! While turtle bay is on the protected side of the island, we highly recommend trying to visit the Abrolhos islands on a calm and still day. This will offer the best water clarity and colour!

With its iconic candy coloured stripes, Geraldton’s point Moore lighthouse is a haven for photography. Our favourite time to photograph the colourful lighthouse is during both sunrise and sunset as the golden light provides a softness to your image. We find the most important consideration here is the foreground - ideally finding one that will complement the lighthouse. Our favourite option for this is to use the sand dunes directly south of the lighthouse. You can get nice and low and capture more of the abstract patterns in the sand or you can stay up high and capture more of the windswept shapes created. There is also the option of shooting from a higher perspective –using a drone and capturing the defined curve in the road (just south of the lighthouse).

Eye catching colours, unique designs and the feeling of being momentarily transported to a completely different world, as you wander through the streets of Geraldton’s CBD, you will find yourself in a world of colour...and reaching for your camera. While the famous Geraldton butterflies maybe no longer, there is certainly no shortage of quirky, eclectic and fabulously urban street art awaiting you. Our personal favourites were down the alleyway near Yamaji Art Centre which had a plethora of different colours and designs. In terms of photography, we found using a regular camera (or phone) worked best here, given the narrow laneways. We also found a wide angle lens was best to capture the range of incredible art on display. The street art can be captured all day, but we personally recommend morning or late afternoon so the light isn’t so harsh.
Located on the foreshore, the Yamaji Art 'emu eggs' are a beautiful display of how different interpretations of art can come together. Our favourite time of day to capture this stunning collection is about 1-2hours after sunrise so the light is still nice and softbot the colours in the eggs, the ocean and the contrasting red dirt are still nice and vibrant. In terms of photography, we loved the unique perspective a drone offered here, and chose to include ourselves in the frame to show the scale of the eggs and the iconic coastal view of Geraldton. For aerial photography here, we recommend wearing bright, neutral colours soyou can stand out against the red dirt (but without taking away from the colourful works of art!). A regular camera (or phone) also works wonderfully here for capturing the intricate details of the eggs.

We love all the wee jetties and piers dotted around – especially the wee fishing pier, the jetties with several boats moored, and the rocky breakwaters. These areal great options for top-down aerial photography! We particularly loved this incredible love heart-shaped coral right near the Rubik’s cube toilets. To find this love heart-shaped coral, head to The Jaffle Shack on the main foreshore and swim out to the first breakwater (bordering the marina). This spot is best captured from above if you have a drone, and we recommend visiting during golden hour so the light isn’t too harsh but the water colour is still bright and vibrant. Alternatively, you can capture a beautiful image of the boats at sunset with golden light streaming in. Skeetas Restaurant has a magnificent view of the marina too!

A very moving and meaningful tribute to our lost sailors on the HMAS Sydney II; this memorial is a location that should be included on any visit to Geraldton. While the memorial and its heartfelt symbolism will cause you to reflect, think and pay your respects, you may find the thoughtful design and architecture also has you reaching foryour camera. We adored the dome in the centre of the memorial, not only offering beautiful views overlooking all of Geraldton, but the symbolism of the 645seagulls in the design-representing the sailors who passed. We found it very special coming hereat sunrise and watching the sun slowly come up through the circular structure. To capture the sunrise through the dome you may need to brackets your shots to capture a larger dynamic range. We preferred waiting for the sun to be up to see the top of the dome glistening with the first rays of the morning sun.

Located in the heart of Geraldton, get ready for a cathedral like no other. Often described as John Hawes' greatest creation, the St Francis Xavier Cathedral boasts quirky striped walls, vibrant night lighting and iconic stone arch structures. In terms of photography, we love shooting both the interior and the exterior of the cathedral. For the interior, you will want a wide angle lens to capture the curvature of thearchies. We found visiting during the middle of the day worked well here as light streamed in through the paned glass windows. For shooting the exterior of the cathedral, we highly recommend visiting at nighttime and capturing the iconic building underneath a star-lit sky. If you’re looking to take your photography here to the next level, during the months of June and August, you can capture the milky way rising behind the church. However, you will need to be mindful of nearby light pollution given the cathedral is righting town!

The ultimate display of resilience, we absolutely love the iconic wind blown trees of Greenough. Caused by the airborne salt content that comes in with the winds from the Indian ocean, the tree trunks now miraculously lie horizontal to the ground. There is a small pull-off on the side of the road(signposted) where you can walk right up to the fence and take photos of the incredible sight. Our favourite time to shoot the leaning trees is during sunset, particularly during the months of March, April, September & October as you can get the full sun perfectly aligned through the curved and collapsed trunk - making for a unique take on such a popular photography location! To capture a sun sparkle, you will want to be in position well before the sunsets. Set your aperture, to 13 or above. While you can’t go into the paddock with the trees (private property) you can use the gate at the start to add some height to your frame and if you have a person –get them to step up on the gate and play around with the focus. It looks great having either the subject or the tree in focus/ blurred.

Ellendale Pool a beautiful spot for photography, it’s also perfect for camping. In terms of photography, any camera works wonderfully here, however we personally preferred using a drone to really capture the sheer size of the gorge. If using a drone at Ellendale Pool, we recommend shooting during the golden hours when the light is still nice and soft but the cliff walls are vibrant. A cloudy day will also offer beautiful, mirrored reflections in the waters it is often calm and still here. Alternatively, using a regular camera and setting it up on the riverbank makes for an incredible photo on sunrise, with the gorge wall glowing the most vibrant shade of red. You can get creative here and add a subject to your sunrise frame too!
